Medical Research Commercialisation Fund

The Medical Research Commercialisation Fund (MRCF) is a venture capital firm established in 2007 to support the commercialisation of early-stage medical research discoveries originating from its member institutes. The fund is managed by Brandon Capital Partners and has secured a total of $380 million over three separate funding rounds, with membership now including 50 medical research institutes and research hospitals across Australia and New Zealand. The MRCF focuses on the medical research field, aiming to commercialise Australian research locally to improve the economic outcomes that flow from research investments.

The fund's investment strategy involves providing dedicated funding to support the development and commercialisation of early-stage medical technologies. It invests between $200,000 and $2 million for each project that is accepted following a rigorous approval process. The MRCF's investors include major Australian superannuation funds such as AustralianSuper, Statewide Super, HESTA, and HOSTPLUS, as well as the Australian Government under the Innovation Investment Fund program. The fund is also supported by the State Governments of Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland, and South Australia.

The MRCF has a track record of investing in promising medical technologies, with a portfolio that includes companies like OncoRes Medical, an intraoperative imaging technology company that assesses the completeness of tumour removal during surgery, and Respirion Pharmaceuticals, an early-stage biotechnology company focused on developing new treatments for respiratory disease. These investments have led to significant advancements in medical treatments and the creation of jobs in the medical technology sector.
