REDF is a San Francisco-based venture philanthropy organization that invests exclusively in employment social enterprises (ESEs)—businesses that provide jobs, training, and support to individuals overcoming barriers to employment. Founded in 1997 by George R. Roberts, REDF partners with both for-profit and nonprofit ESEs, offering capital, capacity-building support, and community engagement to amplify their impact. Since its inception, REDF has invested in nearly 300 ESEs across 38 states and the District of Columbia, collectively helping over 100,000 people enter the workforce and generating more than $2 billion in revenue reinvested into employee success. This approach has led to a social return on investment of $2.23 for every dollar invested. REDF's strategy focuses on providing grants, impact investments, and unlocking public sector capital to fuel the growth of ESEs. Additionally, REDF offers customized capacity-building support to strengthen leadership and operational excellence within these enterprises. By building a sense of community among ESE leaders, REDF fosters deeper connections and shared learning, further enhancing the effectiveness of these organizations.
