ShelterTech is a global accelerator program launched by Habitat for Humanity's Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter, focusing on supporting startups that address challenges in the affordable housing sector. The program aims to identify and nurture innovative solutions that can disrupt or catalyze improvements in the affordable housing value chain, with a strong emphasis on core housing. ShelterTech operates in various regions, including Mexico, Kenya, India, Southeast Asia, and the Andean region of South America, providing a platform for entrepreneurs to develop and scale their housing-related innovations.
The accelerator program is structured in multiple phases, offering participants access to masterclasses, mentorship, and connections with potential partners, investors, and other supporters. It also provides catalytic funds of up to US$25,000 to selected startups, enabling them to refine their innovations and better position themselves for growth and scale. Through these initiatives, ShelterTech aims to create a global network of affordable housing innovators and equip them with the tools and information needed to bring their solutions to the 1.6 billion people worldwide who lack decent and affordable housing.
ShelterTech's approach is results-based and evidence-driven, working across sectors, industries, and geographies to bring together impactful innovations that improve housing conditions for low-income families. By supporting housing entrepreneurs and building meaningful collaborations with private sector players and other stakeholders, ShelterTech seeks to address the deficit in affordable and quality housing, thereby reducing poverty and increasing the quality of life for low-income households. The program's ultimate goal is to significantly reduce the housing deficit and make housing one of the top five impact investment categories by 2025.
