Investor Details Founded: 2004
Established by the VCTF Act 2004 (Act 680), the Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) is a government-backed fund of funds in Ghana. Its primary objective is to invest in venture capital funds that provide financing to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), thereby fostering economic growth and job creation within the country. VCTF aims to create a vibrant and well-structured venture capital industry by leading investments across various sectors, contributing to the development of a thriving private sector.
VCTF operates through Venture Capital Finance Companies (VCFCs), each managed by a licensed Fund Manager. These VCFCs act as intermediaries between SMEs seeking funding and the Trust Fund, facilitating investments in diverse industries such as technology, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The Trust Fund's strategic initiatives include the Ghana Economic Transformation Project (GETP), which aims to diversify Ghana's economy and enhance competitiveness by driving private capital and firm growth in non-resource-based sectors. VCTF's role in GETP involves accelerating entrepreneurship and SME growth through targeted investments and partnerships.
Over the years, VCTF has made significant contributions to Ghana's venture capital ecosystem. It has supported the establishment of the Ghana Alternative Exchange (GAX), promoting SME listings and providing a platform for companies with growth potential to access long-term capital. Additionally, VCTF launched the Ghana Angel Investor Network (GAIN) in 2011, organizing high-net-worth individuals to invest in and mentor entrepreneurs. These initiatives have positioned Ghana as a growing hub for venture capital and private equity in Africa, attracting both local and international investors to support the country's economic transformation.
